- Sailing techniques and manoeuvres
- Sailing background – principles of sailing

How much is it?
The cost of the course is £50 per adult for existing members. The course is open to non-members at a cost of £140 which also includes membership of the Club for the current year.
What you need to know before the course
Our Start Dinghy Sailing courses run from 9.00 am until 5.00 pm on both Saturday and Sunday, wind permitting. If it’s too windy we will move the course to another date convenient to all concerned. You need to finish both days to complete the course.
We will provide buoyancy aids and we provide a range of different training dinghies for you to use during the course and to gain experience after you have completed the course. The course is run by qualified and experienced instructors.
If you already own some equipment, please bring it along but please do not go out and buy gear for the course. You’re unlikely to know which type you prefer and may not even want to continue sailing (though we hope you do!).
As you are likely to get wet you need to bring a change of warm clothes, old trainers to sail in and maybe a woolly hat and gloves if it is cold.
You will need to bring a packed lunch; we can provide hot drinks and snacks for the breaks. Please bring any medication you may require throughout the day.
All of our instructors are RYA qualified, and we have a rescue boat on the water whenever you are sailing.
After you’ve completed the course
After you have completed your course, you should be able to safely sail a triangular course. You will be invited to sail with us on any of our Sunday sailing sessions. You can also borrow one of our training boats to gain experience and improve your skills.
Our young people and improvers’ sessions are held on Saturday afternoon once a month at Denholme throughout the summer and autumn, please contact us for more details.
Please note that you will cover the syllabus up to a standard of RYA Level 1 ‘start sailing’. However, as the Club is not an RYA Training Centre if you require a Level 1 certificate you can complete an assessment at our partner Halifax Sailing Club shortly after you complete the training at Denholme.
